Often new technology in the workplace is viewed as a negative. It often reduces the number of jobs for people. Especially in factories and maybe one day in pharmacies. In the case of new software it's something new (and usually frustrating) the employees have to learn and often has glitches at first implementation. However, the above article describes how technology in the workplace can help create jobs for people with disabilities. Walgreens opened a new distribution center in 2007 that had touchscreen computers and automated guided vehicles. Both of these could be utilized by people with disabilities to perform their jobs better. Now, 40 percent of the workers in that center have a disability. That amount is staggering seeing as most workplaces don't have any employees with disabilities. Walgreens is planning to increase hiring of people with disabilities to about 20 percent of its distribution center workers at all their sites, from slightly less than 10 percent at the end of last year. This is beneficial for their sites and is also creating jobs for a group of people that otherwise may not have had these opportunities. In this case I would say technology in the workplace is a very good thing.
